"On every street in every city in this country, there’s a nobody who dreams of being somebody. He’s a lonely forgotten man desperate to prove that he’s alive."
A character study about an insomniac 'nam veteran, who takes a job as a night time taxi driver due to being unable to sleep.
There's something off about him. He never seems to be able to form proper social bonds, leading him to spiral in his isolation until the explosive breaking point.
Travis Bickle is a fish out of water.
He is war veteran sent back to the homeland, he is a country boy walking around the big city with his cowboy boots, he is a proto-incel that manages to get a chance with a beautiful high class women but fumbles it BADLY, he can't form any meaningful connections with his fellow cabbies, and he is possibly autistic (popular interpretation even among the chuddier fans).
There's a scene I find particularly strong. The one where he tries to reach out to Wizard, yet Wizard is unable to give him any particularly good advice to help his feelings. I see some people interpret this as a representation of society not actually caring about the mental turmoil of people like Travis, but I think that interpretation is very unsympathetic to Wizard. Travis himself can't describe his feelings properly, and his venting comes of as disjointed ramblings. Even if Wizard wanted to help, there's not much he can do if he can't even decipher what Travis has given him.
Travis is God's lonely man. His own little soldier fighting his own war against himself and the world around him.
And why do I like this movie so much?
Because he just like me fr
